Sustainable and Resilient Societies Summer School in Rome

June 23 - June 28

We are delighted to announce that applications are now open for the second edition of the Sustainable and Resilient Societies Summer School, an interdisciplinary one-week programme taking place June 23-28, 2025, at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR).

The programme brings together experts from sociology, demography, economics, history, psychology, and organization science to explore polycrises - multiple, interconnected crises that interact and amplify one another. Participants will engage with an overarching analytical framework that moves beyond disciplinary silos and single-cause explanations, equipping them with innovative tools for tackling real-world crises.

Ideal Candidates

Are you a (Research) Master’s student, postgraduate student, PhD or postdoc researcher, early-career professional, or policymaker working on or interested in polycrises? Do you encounter these challenges in your work and seek integrated, interdisciplinary approaches? Do you want to engage in solution-driven discussions with peers from diverse backgrounds?

If you answered yes to any of the above, this is your opportunity to be part of something transformative.

Why Attend?

Study in the Heart of Rome

  • The KNIR is located in Valle Giulia, just behind Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo, an inspiring setting for an enriching academic and cultural experience. Shared accommodation is provided at the institute, for a fully immersive experience.

Experience Rome Beyond the Classroom

  • The programme includes a field trip and ample time to explore the city, encouraging participants to connect course topics with their surroundings, drawing inspiration from Rome’s rich history and dynamic environment.

Network & Collaborate

  • Engage with a select group of peers and leading experts, building professional relationships that extend beyond the summer school!

By the end of the SuRe Summer School, you will have a solid grasp of social mechanism reasoning and the CMO-based Realist Evaluation - essential frameworks in evidence based policymaking. You will be able to apply these insights to real-world crises, designing effective, research-driven interventions for more sustainable and resilient societies.
