SAVE THE DATE – Virtual Symposium: A New Generation of Human Security

June 8, 2021 @ 8:30 am - June 11, 2021 @ 11:30 am UTC-4

June 8-11, 2021
8:30 am - 11:30 am US EDT (UTC-4)

Today, the world faces interconnected challenges across our natural and social systems which are having a massive – and growing - impact on people’s security. Expanding on the pioneering work by the 1994 Human Development Report and the Ogata-Sen Commission, we will explore what “freedom from want and freedom from fear” means in this new era. As a first step we are organizing a symposium on human security.

The symposium will pay special attention to issues that have risen to prominence in recent years, especially those that are expected to last beyond the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, such as:

Threats to human security including violent conflicts and crime, specifically a new form of violent conflict with more civilian casualties, as well as organized crime and related citizen insecurity.

Structural changes to human security threats: threats that have emerged from both the Anthropocene and the digital age.

Human insecurity as a threat to human development, including topics such as economic security, health, domestic violence, dignity, multidimensional inequalities, discrimination, and polarization.

The way forward: new aspirations and new responses during challenging times, focused on revisiting the concept of human security and identifying potential policy responses to people’s aspirations in the 21st century.

Discussions will focus on conceptual issues, measurement, and policy options.
