Seminar Series: Human development, capabilities and higher education in Global South contexts
March 2, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm UTC+2
2 March, 2022 from 12:30-14:00 SAST
The SARCHI Chair in Higher Education and Human Development cordially invites you to our first seminar event for the year. We are very pleased to kick off the series with Dr Alexandre Apsan Frediani, whose talk will be based on a paper that explores how the principles of participatory action research (PAR) articulate with questions of climate justice. Drawing on three qualitative case studies in Brazil, Fiji and Kenya, the paper explores university institutional capabilities, asking how the principles of mobilising PAR to support transformative outcomes can promote climate justice.
Dr Frediani is a principal researcher at the Human Settlements Group of the International Institute for Environment and Development, in London (UK). He leads the housing justice thematic work of IIED and specialises on issues around human development in cities of the global South. His work explores participatory approaches to planning and design of interventions in informal settlements in cities in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has also been conducting research and development projects focusing on the role of knowledge production and translation in advancing a more socially and environmentally just urban development. In his most recent research initiatives, Dr Frediani is a co-investigator for the research projects Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality and Transforming Universities for a Changing Climate. He is an expert affiliate of Architecture Sans Frontières-UK, and is part of the boards of Habitat International Coalition and the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre.
