ClimUrb International Workshop: Living in Low-income Urban Settlements in an Era of Climate Change: Processes, Practices, Policies and Politics

Accelerated urbanisation in low- and middle-income countries, alongside a rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, suggests that climate change is already a factor in urbanisation. Associated with this is a worsening of urban poverty, and a dramatic rise in the vulnerability of low-income settlement dwellers to shocks.

Adaptation practices of the urban poor have the potential to inform ‘what works’ in low-income settlements - in terms of built-environment changes, livelihood diversifications, and social mobilisation and political change. We are keen to engage with leading scholars through a two-day invited workshop at the University of Manchester, UK. Output from the workshop will be published as an edited book and/or journal special issue.

The objectives of this workshop are:

• To deepen the understanding of the broader processes that shape and mediate the responses to climate change of poor urban households and communities in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and
• To contribute to the evolution of more effective pro-poor climate change policies by local governments, national governments and international organisations
