Multidimensional poverty measurement in the post-2015 development context – live webcast of side-event at the UN General Assembly

1.15-2.30 pm (EST), 24 September 2013, United Nations, New York
Live and on-demand webcast coverage will be available on UN Web TV:

The Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network will hold a special side-event to coincide with the High Level Meetings of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly. The event will address the future of multidimensional poverty measurement in the context of the post-2015 development agenda.

Panelists working at the forefront of poverty measurement will make the case for a new multidimensional poverty index (MPI) 2015+ (also described as an MPI 2.0) to support the post-2015 development goals. The MPI2015+ would often be complemented by national MPIs, as in Mexico and Colombia, whose indicators reflect national priorities and contexts. The Network will echo calls for a ‘data revolution’ to undergird multidimensional poverty measures with better and more frequent data.

Confirmed speakers at the event on 24 September include:
  • Colombia: Bruce Mac Master, Director, Department of Social Prosperity
  • Germany: Gudrun Kopp, Parliamentary Secretary of State
  • Mexico: Gonzalo Hernandez, Director of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL)
  • Philippines: Arsenio Balisacan, Minister of Socioeconomic Planning
  • Morocco: Ahmed Lahlimi Alami, High Commissioner of Planning
  • Nigeria: Shamsuddeen Usman, Minister of Planning
  • Chile: Bruno Baranda, Minister of Social Development
  • Jaime Saavedra, Acting Vice President, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management, World Bank
  • Erik Solheim, Chair, OECD Development Assistance Committee
  • Sabina Alkire, Director, OPHI, University of Oxford

Live and on-demand webcast coverage will be available on UN Web TV: http://webtv.un.org

Data shows that people who are multidimensionally poor are not necessarily income poor. Nor do the same policies reduce both poverties. By adopting a multidimensional poverty measure to support the post-2015 development goals, we can incorporate participatory insights of those living in poverty and ensure we eradicate both multidimensional and income poverty.

This event is organised by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, CONEVAL of Mexico, the Department for Social Prosperity of Colombia, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative at the University of Oxford (OPHI) and the new Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network, a global network of policymakers dedicated to advancing the multidimensional measurement of poverty and improving poverty reduction efforts.

Workshop ‘The well-being of children. Theory, Practice and Policy’ (Manchester, UK)

The well-being of children. Theory, Practice and Policy -
MANCEPT Workshops in Political Theory

Date: September 4-6, 2013
Deadline for applications: May 15, 2013

The last years have seen an increasing interest in the topic of well-being across different disciplines. Questions of measurement and such regarding the normative value of well-being for theories of justice have been widely discussed. Furthermore, it has been acknowledged that these theoretical considerations interlink with questions of policy design andpolitical practice. There seems to be a shift that well-being might become one of the main indicators to measure the success of policies on all different levels, from the local to the national up to the international, and in many different policy areas.

Against this general background, we want to explore questions related to the theory, practice and policy of the well-being of children. Children are special in many aspects: it is a widely shared understanding that children are not able to fully understand their situation, that they are limited in their ability to make reasonable decisions about themselves and their actions, that they do not always act in their best interests, that they need the help and guidance of adults or that theyneed special protection from various harms and from making wrong choices. It is further well studied that the well-being during childhood has a significant influence on the whole future life course and adulthood. These factors make the well-being of children a topic of importance but also one that is confronted with many conceptual, normative and methodological difficulties that need to be addressed from different disciplines.

Workshop Living in Low-income Urban Settlements in an Era of Climate Change (Manchester, UK)

ClimUrb International Workshop: Living in Low-income Urban Settlements in an Era of Climate Change: Processes, Practices, Policies and Politics

Deadline for abstracts submission: May 17, 2013
Notifications of acceptance: May 31, 2013
Full papers submission: July 31, 2013

Accelerated urbanisation in low- and middle-income countries, alongside a rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, suggests that climate change is already a factor in urbanisation. Associated with this is a worsening of urban poverty, and a dramatic rise in the vulnerability of low-income settlement dwellers to shocks.

Adaptation practices of the urban poor have the potential to inform ‘what works’ in low-income settlements - in terms of built-environment changes, livelihood diversifications, and social mobilisation and political change. We are keen to engage with leading scholars through a two-day invited workshop at the University of Manchester, UK. Output from the workshop will be published as an edited book and/or journal special issue.

The objectives of this workshop are:

  • To deepen the understanding of the broader processes that shape and mediate the responses to climate change of poor urban households and communities in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and
  • To contribute to the evolution of more effective pro-poor climate change policies by local governments, national governments and international organisations

Abstracts (maximum 300 words) should be submitted to climurb@manchester.ac.uk

Revolutions in Education: New Opportunities for Development? (Maastricht, the Netherlands)

Deadline for abstract submissions: May 30, 2013

Demographic, social, economic and technological revolutions have shaken the field of education in recent years. Access to better information and communication technologies coupled with growing youth unemployment, economic turbulence, climate change, as well as social revolutions (e.g. the Arab Spring) is rapidly changing the traditional classroom. Examples of such changes includes the dramatic growth in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), the development of digital badges, the increasing popularity of gamification and the ubiquitous access and use of smart phones and tablets. Can these changes be harnessed to support social and economic development, including improved management skills, entrepreneurial outcomes, and gender equality? Are the confluence of technological and social change and a greater scrutiny of the role of business in environmental and social challenges requiring a re-think of the typical business school? These and related topics will be explored at the 3rd International Research Conference of the Maastricht School of Management, organized in co-operation with the Department of Educational Research and Development of Maastricht University.
